Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday

#GivingTuesday is Today, November 29th

December is upon us and it is the time to consider End-of-Year giving to charitable organizations. Perhaps many of you are like me and never thought about supporting organizations in any regular way. Then again, perhaps you are like my client whose parents were very philanthropic and instilled in her at a very young age the habit of giving.

I had never heard of #GivingTuesday and I’m sure I’m not alone. 2016 marks it’s 5th year. Held after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it is a young movement that has increased online giving significantly.

Wondering how your favorite charity rates? There are organizations online that helps donors determine if the charities they are considering to support are reputable and for the charity it helps them be transparent. Ones like IRS Exempt or GuideStar to name a few.  If you’re looking to make a difference and receive a tax deduction it would be important to know if your organization is a qualified 501(c)(3). You will find Wisconsin Women’s Fund is listed with GuideStar as a Silver level participant. There you will also find they are a qualified 501(c)(3) charity.

I have always been daunted by the thought of not having enough resources to be able give or a make a big enough contribution to have any impact. In recent years, I have challenged that thought and have come to realize that if each one of us took up the cause(s) we are most passionate about no two people would make the same choice, and in the end the need would be covered. Lovely thought, no? But most people do not donate, so there is still a gap. My client, as generous as she is, cannot cover all the gaps, nor should she. She is doing her part about the things that matter most to her.

The #GivingTuesday movement is filling that gap. Online giving is helping small and medium sized charitable organizations become more visible. It has also increased the amount of matching donations charitable organizations receive. It also has shifted how people donate and made charitable giving more accessible.

All of us here at Wisconsin Women’s Fund ask those of you whose passion is cycling for your support.  A donation to the Wisconsin Women’s Fundwill link you to our mission to drive change as we inspire Girls and Women to make healthy choices, on and off their bikes.
